Juanita M. Schlagel, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on Saturday, July 16, 2016. Juanita was born on August 17, 1930. In Southwick, Idaho and moved to Porterville, California at the age of three. She was the daughter of Matt and Callie Mabry Peckenpaugh. She was a graduate of Porterville High School Class of 1948. She was employed by Pacific Bell and General Telephone Company of Porterville, Lindsay and Reedley for 25 years. Her interests and hobbies were many and varied. They included cooking, sewing, gardening, ceramics, crocheting, traveling with her family and friends. Juanita was a member of the Porterville Church of the Nazarene for 75 years, joining on January 12, 1941 and received the Dare to Soar Award for this recognition. She and her husband received the Distinguished Service Award from the Nazarene World Missionary Society on January 19, 1997. Juanita was a member of the Lamplighters Sunday School Class for over 60 years. The church was a mainstay of her life while making an array of life-long friendships. While her daughters were growing up, she served as an advisor for the Westfield 4-H Club. She also made the first banner for the Pioneer Junior High School Band. Her special love for her Savior, family and friends was evident throughout her abundant life. Juanita is survived by and will be greatly missed by her loving husband of 58 years, Richard "Dick" Schlagel, five daughters; Gloria Anderson (Rony), Frances Manley, Georgeanne Borjon (Michael), Sharon Taira of Bakersfield, CA and Cindy Camarena (David). She is also survived by ten grandchildren; Valerie Craig (Rick), Angie Alcantar (Ernie), Jason Evans of Georgia, Jennifer Anderson (Lina), Amber Morales (Marcial), Amanda Smith (Ramon) of San Diego, Jonathan Camarena (Kristen), Nick Taira, Ashlee Taira all of Bakersfield, CA., Josh Camarena and fiancAC. Katie Gisler. Juanita was very proud and enjoyed the visits and energy of her six great-grandchildren; Teresa Alcantar, Tomas Alcantar, Nathaniel Craig, Isabella Morales, Jasmine Evans of Georgia and Remi Camarena. She is also survived by her sister Junia Long of Jackson, California, brother-in-law and wife Mike and Winona Swen of Bakersfield, California, sister-in-law Jane McCutcheon of Vinton, California and brother-in-law Donald Schlagel of Butler, PA., several nephews and nieces. The family would like to give special thanks and appreciation for the care provided by her loving, caring and visiting Angel, Luisa Moody for the past 18 months. Visitation and viewing will be on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 from 4:00pm to7:00pm at Whitehurst-Peters-Loyd Funeral Home, 195 North Hockett Street, Porterville. Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday July 20, 2016 at 1:00pm at the Porterville Church of the Nazarene, 2005 West Olive Avenue, Porterville. Graveside services will take place on Thursday July 21, 2016 at 2:00pm at the Bakersfield National Cemetery located at 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd. off of Hwy 58 East.
