Nelda was born in Hobart, Oklahoma on April 11, 1922. She passed away on June 12, 2015. Shortly after her birth the family moved to California. After living in various towns in Kern and Tulare counties, her father asked her where she wanted to live. She replied, "Porterville, because it's so pretty and the people are nice." Porterville is where she lived for the rest of her life. She felt blessed by being adopted by the most loving parents a child could have William and Estella Cross. During the height of WWII Nelda met and married Norman Likewise. Together they raised three children, William, Harry and Sandra. Nelda was very active in school affairs and the PTA while her children were growing up. The house was always open to young ones. She taught numerous neighborhood youths to play the guitar, learn to dance and to simply enjoy life. Love and kindness motivated everything she did. She had a great love of the outdoors, especially the mountains. Some of her fondest memories were of camping and fishing with her family and vacationing in Alaska and Canada. Even though family came first, she worked in the community at the Telephone Office, Montgomery Ward, Smith's Drug Store and on the election board during election years. For the past forty years, Nelda has been associated with the Golden Valley Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. She found great joy in sharing her faith with others. Preceded in death were both her parents, William and Estella Cross, her son Bill in 1985 and her beloved husband Norman in 2001. She leaves behind to mourn her passing a son, Harry Likewise (wife Barbara) and a daughter, Sandra Overbolt (husband Richard). Other family members include daughter-in-law Ruth Eilers of Tucson, AZ, granddaughter Renee Kirberger of Tucson, AZ and four grandsons, Bill Likewise of Tempe, AZ, Michael Likewise of Corvallis, and Gerald Likewise and Christopher Likewise both of Porterville. She also leaves behind 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
